Eskilstuna Biogas AB (“EBAB”) will start the construction of a 70 GWh or ca. 5.400 ton LBG plant outside Eskilstuna with several important partners such as multiple local Eskilstuna farmers, Eskilstuna Energi & Miljö, Klimatklivet, Gotlandsbolaget, Equitix New Generation a UK based infra structure fund and Andion CH4 Renewables. The plant will be one of the largest of its kind in the Nordic region and will have the most modern technology and will supply local municipality services and Destination Gotland with renewable LBG. The plant is expected to start producing LBG from Q2 2026.
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – The Eskilstuna Biogas project is a 70 GWh biogas plant located just outside of the city of Eskilstuna. The project has the capacity for processing of up to 150,000 tons per year of locally sourced agricultural waste and food waste to produce up to 5,400 ton per year of liquefied biogas (“LBG”). The feedstock has been secured from numerous local farmers who also are co-owners of the project and from Eskilstuna Energi & Miljö (“EEM”). The offtake volumes have been secured through long term supply Contracts with the local municipality EEM, and through Destination Gotland who is a subsidiary of the equity investor Gotlandsbolaget (Rederiaktiebolaget Gotland, publ.). The plant will also have an LBG public filling station facility. The digestate will be sold as high quality biofertilizer back to the farmers.
The project is fully permitted and fulfils the national, regional and municipal environmental goals of circular economy. The project started with enabling works on the site in August 2024 and is planned for start-up of gas production under Q2 2026.
The project is constructed and partly financed by Andion CH4 Renewables (“Andion”), a global leader in delivering proven and comprehensive waste-to-energy solutions. The other investment partners are Gotlandsbolaget, Equitix New Generation Fund (“Equitix”) and the project is supported by a climate grant through the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the Climate Leap initiative (“Klimatklivet”) whose main aim is to provide the investment support that makes it possible to invest in fossil-free future technology and green transition.
The Environmental Protection Agency has been commissioned, along with other central government agencies and the county administrative boards to support local climate investments through the EU Next Generation fund to reduce the emissions that affect the climate. The Climate Leap initiative is co-financed by the EU’s recovery fund, Next Generation EU.
“We are very excited to finally start the construction of the Eskilstuna biogas plant with a distinguished group of strategic investors and valuable municipality and local farming partners. We are also looking forward to contributing to a 10% CO2 reduction in the region and lead the way for other necessary green initiatives in the years to come in the region.” said Kaj Wågdahl, Chairman of Eskilstuna Biogas AB.
“The investment in the biogas plant is strategically important for Gotlandsbolaget. We all know that the transition in society and the maritime industry is essential, and through this investment, we are further contributing to that development. To reduce the carbon emissions from our ships, we need access to increased volumes of renewable fuels, which we will now achieve. The construction of the biogas plant in Eskilstuna is therefore significant both for society at large and for the maritime industry.” Said Anders Boman, Head of Growth of Gotlandsbolaget.
“Renewable natural gas (RNG) solutions are increasingly playing a key role in helping corporations and municipalities meet their carbon targets. We are excited to partner with Eskilstuna Biogas AB as this long–term secular trend presents a tremendous opportunity for institutional investors in the global sustainable finance markets,” said Oskar Backman, Managing Director of Equitix in the Nordic region.
“We are very pleased to partner with Eskilstuna Biogas AB as an investor, as well as the core technology provider and operator of the Eskilstuna project and sees this as the first of many long–term strategic investments in the Nordic region for Andion” said Christer Martin-Löf, CEO of Andion Nordic.
THE TECHNOLOGY OF ESKILSTUNA BIOGAS
Eskilstuna Biogas AB has chosen Andion as its technology and operating partner, Andion’s technology makes organic waste handling and conversion to biogas efficient, sustainable and economically viable. The company has successfully delivered more than 50 complete anaerobic digestion facilities as well as over 130 complex wastewater treatment plants throughout Europe.
Andion’s waste-to-energy facilities provide environmental and socio-economic benefits for cities facing waste challenges in Europe. Current methods for managing organic waste include; sending waste to landfills; waste-to-energy recovery through incineration; composting; and anaerobic digestion. Sending waste to landfills contributes to the production of methane while managing waste through anaerobic digestion is carbon negative. Anaerobic digestion reduces greenhouse gas emissions, eliminates odours, does not require a large footprint, and as well, supports the circular economy as the waste is recycled into biogas, compost and fertilizer.
Andion’s facilities have the ability to process hundreds of thousands of tons of a variety of organic waste, reducing greenhouse gases from transportation, landfills and burning of waste. This process creates renewable energy (biogas), a sustainable source of fuel for communities around the world.
